Hormonal Balance And Weight Loss

Our hormone health affects our bodies in several ways and one of them is an increase in weight. Hormonally challenged women put on weight around their middle between the armpits and the top of the thighs. Usually their arms are normal, their legs are normal and from the neck up they look great! Hormonally challenged men put on weight around their waists and often are on their way to developing breasts!

Estrogen is produced in our fat cells. Estrogen increases fat cells. Consequently, more estrogen is produced more fat cells are generated.

Breaking the estrogen cycle and then going on a good weight reduction program is exactly what needs to be done.

Step One.

Evaluate your hormones. Identify the ratio of estrogen to progesterone in your body. If estrogen is dominating, then you will probably have or currently be gaining weight around your middle.

Step Two.

Start an estrogen-lowering program. That will include boosting your progesterone levels with a bio-identical progesterone cream. However, hormone balancing has never been all about progesterone. Modulating and managing estrogens if found to be out of balance to progesterone is equally important to your weight loss program.

An estrogen-lowering program includes:

1. Increase your fiber intake. Eat as much as you can by choosing fruits, vegetables and whole grains as your high fiber carbohydrate choices and then add a fiber supplement  to consume 30 to 50 grams of fiber daily.
2. Increase the indoles (cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower) in your diet.
3. Increase the essential fatty acids (EFA) in your diet. They are important because the body does not produce them. They assist in balancing prostaglandin production in the body and thus help regulating estrogens.
4. Improve your overall nutrition by taking extra vitamin C and by taking a concentrated fruit and vegetable supplement.

Step Three.

Eat 40/30/30. Incorporate a new way of approaching meals consuming carbohydrates, proteins and fats in a balanced way at every meal. When we eat balanced meals our weight normalizes, our energy levels increase and our hormones are in balance.

Step Four.

Get Moving. Develop a good workout program with the help of somebody who knows what they are doing. Customize a program specifically for you – one that you can perform and are ready to make a commitment to keep. Many of us need to think in terms of keeping our bodies moving and staying active for the rest of our lives. Couch potatoes rarely are healthy.

Step Five.

Celebrate! People whose hormones are out of balance feel unwell. Reaching the hormone balance will increase your overall health and wellness and help you in losing weight. You will look younger and feel better!

Natural vs. Modern Medicine

When you get sick, you visit the doctor. And the doctor, of course, prescribes medications. You go and buy those medications. You take them, and hopefully, you get well. This is how the health practice goes on nowadays – a cycle of diagnosis and prescription.

If anyone were to offer you herbs for healing, you would probably say that that person was a quack. However nowadays, research is being conducted to verify if there really is any value to what is known as natural medicine.

Natural medicine is the use of natural remedies, herbal medicines, and traditional practices to heal ailments. Every culture has a sort of natural medicine. In ancient cultures, village medicine men served as the doctors of the community, passing on medical knowledge to the apprentices that followed them.

Many categories of the healing solutions fall under natural medicine. Among these are traditional medicine, complementary medicine, and alternative medicine.

Generally, natural medicine refers to medical practices that were in place prior to the advent of modern medicine. This includes herbal medicine, or phytotherapy, which is prevalent in Chinese, Ayurvedic(or Indian), and Greek medicine.

Upon the advent of modern medicine, many professionals discarded the use of herbs in favor of man-made medicine. The fact that these treatments, based on the healing properties of some herbs, were forgotten.

For example, opium, digitalis, quinine, and aspirin all have their origins in traditional medicine.

Natural medicine can be considered as a lost art. This doesn’t imply that it has lost efficiency over time. In some cases, natural therapy is actually better than modern medicine. This makes many physicians seriously consider and study the possible uses of natural medicine.

It is important to stress that not all the natural treatments are legitimate. It would help to only consider those remedies which have been thoroughly studied and are relatively risk-free.

Take herbal medicine for instance. There are numerous well-documented and studied herbal remedies available. However, only those that deal with minor conditions such as cough, colds, fever, skin rashes, and its ilk are usually recommended by health professionals. These kinds of remedies are often better than synthetic medicine. This is because herbal medicines are less likely to cause negative side effects.

Currently there are many organizations that study the effects and advocacy of natural medicine – among which is herbal medicine. Some authorities and health agencies openly recommend the use of natural treatments since they are affordable and relatively risk-free.

As their studies compile, more herbs and treatments are added to the list of approved medicines. However, many herbs and treatments have been proven to be fake medicine. This represents a challenge for both the consumer and the agencies because they have to ascertain that the remedies they either use or advocate are legitimate.

Currently many alternative medical treatments are categorized as natural medicine. However, not all of them have been proven to be effective. You could point out homeopathy, aromatherapy, acupuncture, along with some other alternative medical treatments. It would pay to consult the experts as to the legitimacy of these treatments.

Natural medicine should also be viewed as an accompanying medicine. At this time, the current collective medical thought suggests that natural medicine be used only to supplement approved modern medical practices. In case of minor ailments your doctor we actually advise you to take natural therapies instead.

The practice of modern medicine involves diagnosing an illness and prescribing treatments for such. Natural medicine is helpful because it shows that treatment be not necessarily given only when sick. Natural medicine strives to make each patient practice good health habits. These habits include proper diet, healthy livestyle, and the regular natural therapy.

This is the same line of thought that leads our parents to tell us to eat our vegetables. Indeed, a healthy lifestyle will do no harm to our well-being. And this is the foundation of natural medicine – may it be massage, herbal medicine, aromatherapy or others.

It is funny but true that science, in its pursuit of excellence, is studying the knowledge of sages past. This, surprisingly, leads us back to the remedies nature offers. The chances of finding remedies to everyday illnesses in natural medicine are encouraging. Thus, staying tuned to studying these remedies is worthwhile until we can verify that these therapies are really helpful to our health and our society.

6 Ways Apples Help You Stay Healthy

There is no easier way to add a dose of nutrients to your day than by crunching on an apple. Grown throughout the world, apples are high in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They’re fat-free, cholesterol-free, and low in sodium. In short, eating apples is a smart part of a healthy lifestyle.

6 ways apples help you stay healthy

1.Regulates your day

You don’t have to worry about staying regular anymore. Whether your problem is visiting the bathroom too often or not often enough, apples may help.

A British researcher, Dr. D.P Burkitt, believes one of the easiest ways to protect yourself from many diseases, is to avoid constipation. He calls the diseases caused by chronic constipation “pressure diseases.” Appendicitis, diverticular diseases, hemorrhoids, hiatal hernias, and even varicose veins can all be a result of straining to pass small, hard stools.

Only one apple with its skin contains 4 to 5 grams of fiber – the key nutrient in keeping your bowels working like a well-oiled machine. Keeping yourself regular could be as simple as replacing that afternoon snack of potato chips or cookies with a crispy, delicious apple. And think about the calories you’ll save. The average apple has about 80 calories while a serving of chips has 150 calories and you’ll get about 200 calories from just a few cookies.

But that’s not all apples can do. They’re also great for diarrhea, because of an ingredient called pectin. This carbohydrate has a congealing effect in your intestines that helps firm things up and return you to normal. Applesauce is definitely the best apple product for diarrhea, because it’s made without the high-fiber skin. But be cautious about extra sugar. Some brands of applesauce add a truckload of sweeteners to an otherwise healthy food, and too much refined sugar could make your diarrhea even worse.

2.Apples keep your body young

You probably know that antioxidants can protect you from many diseases that seem to be a part of aging. In fact, a lot of people are taking antioxidant supplements that it’s become a multibillion-dollar industry. But the evidence is growing that whole foods can do more for you than pills.

When scientists compared a 1,500-milligram vitamin C supplement to one small apple, the results were impressive – the antioxidant values were equal. That means a fresh apple has more than 15 times the antioxidant power of the recommended daily dose of vitamin C. And that’s just for beginners. The researchers also found an average apple can stop the growth of colon and liver cancer cells in test tubes. Unpeeled apples were especially effective.

3.Cuts your risk of heart disease

It’s the magnesium and potassium in apples that help regulate your blood pressure and keep your heart beating steadily, and it’s the flavonoid quercetin, a natural antioxidant, that protects your artery walls from damage and keeps your bloodstream flowing smoothly.

In fact adding flavonoid-rich foods like apples to your diet has been clinically confirmed to lower your risk of heart disease. There is proof of this in a study of Japanese women who consumed foods high in quercetin. They were less likely to get coronary heart disease than other women and they had lower levels of  bad cholesterol.

4.Apples help to prevent strokes

Apples are actually a smart choice for helping avoid strokes. Scientists aren’t certain which ingredient in this multi-talented fruit to credit, but the connection is clear – people who regularly eat apples are less likely to have strokes than people who don’t.

5.Protects your joints

In parts of the world where fruits and vegetables make up a big part of the diet, very few people get arthritis. Compare this to modernized countries where fruits and vegetables have been replaced with fast, processed food and you’ll find up to 70 percent of the population suffers from some form of arthritis. Just a coincidence? Not according to nutrition specialists. They link this to boron, a trace mineral many plants, including apples, absorb from the soil.

If you eat like most people, you’ll get about 1 to 2 milligrams (mg) of boron a day, mainly from non-citrus fruits, leafy vegetables, and nuts. Experts believe, however, you need between 3 to 10 mg a day to lower your risk of arthritis. To boost your boron intake to this level, you’d have to eat more than 9 apples a day.

This might be an unreasonable amount for most of us, but don’t despair. Combine an apple with other boron-rich foods such as a few tablespoons of peanut butter and a large handful of raisins, and you’ll not only have a delicious afternoon snack, but you’ll also make your joint-saving quota of boron at the same time.

6.Helps you breathe deeply

Your lungs are assaulted every day by cigarette smoke, air pollution, pollen, and other air-borne nasties.Additionally,  you could be afflicted by asthma, emphysema, or similar lung conditions. If all you want to do is take a deep breath, then grab an apple.
A five-year study of more than 2,500 men from Wales found those who ate 5 or more apples per week were able to fill their lungs with more air than men who didn’t eat apples. Experts believe you might be getting some special protection from the antioxidant quercetin. Unfortunately, eating apples cannot reverse a lung condition you already have, but you just might add a new line of protection against further damage.

Buy apples that are unbruised, firm, and have good color. Take them out of their plastic bag and store them in your refrigerator – loose in the produce bin or in a paper bag is best. And since they absorb odors, keep them away from strong-smelling foods like garlic and onions.

10 Superfoods To Prevent Cancer

Almost the half of all cancers could be prevented by changes in eating habits. Probably the most important thing you can do to minimize your risk is to lose excess weight – and one of the best ways to lose weight is through a fiber-rich diet including plenty of fruits and vegetables.

However, that is not the key reason why the National Cancer Institute recently approved the dietary guidance: “Diets rich in fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of some types of cancer and other chronic diseases.” These foods are packed with antioxidants and other substances that protect your DNA and combat free radical damage.

Due to the fact these substances work synergistically, it’s best to eat a variety of fruit and veggies instead of relying on one specific produce item to act as a magic bullet against disease. Nevertheless, recent studies have discovered certain benefits in the following foods that would suggest making them a part of any healthy diet.

1. Tomatoes: Lycopene, also found in watermelon and pink grapefruit, has been associated with reducing the risk of prostate, ovarian and cervical cancer. In addition, it targets  free radicals that are implicated in lung and digestive cancers.

2. Broccoli sprouts: One forkful activates antioxidant activity that can last for days.

3. Berries: Blueberries, cranberries, cherries, raspberries, strawberries, grapes – all rich in anthocyanins that restore and protect DNA.

4. Soybeans: Isoflavones, such as genistein may help prevent and treat prostate cancer and may lower breast cancer risk.

5. Tea: Both black and green contain powerful compounds revealed in numerous studies to lower the risk of several types of cancer.

6. Pumpkin: This super-food is a super-rich source of both beta-carotene and alpha-carotene, two hard-working carotenoids that combat lung and ovarian cancers.

7. Spinach: May help reduce the chance of liver, ovaries, colon and prostate cancer. The active antioxidant lutein is also found in kale and other leafy greens.

8. Garlic: Allium veggies (which also include onions and scallions) operate to get your body’s own antioxidant defense systems in gear. This process provides protection against stomach, esophageal and breast cancers.

9. Pineapple: The enzyme bromelain may inhibit the expansion of malignant cells in both lung and breast cancer, while the phenolic substances also provide a protective benefit.

10. Apples: Can one a day help keep cancer away? Research shows quercetin may reduce the risk of lung cancer and prevent the growth of prostate cancer cells. Other antioxidants together with pectin help reduce colon and liver cancer cell replication.

Benefits Of Coconut Oil

People all over the world are experiencing healthy benefits of using coconut oil. It is one of the healthiest oils you can consume. Listed below are the top reasons why you should use coconut oil instead of other well-known cooking oils.

Coconut oil doesn’t turn to fat in your body

Unlike many other common oils, such as soy and corn, coconut oil won’t make you fat. Coconut oil contains medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), which are an easy fuel for the body to burn, without turning to fat. The majority of other cooking oils contain long-chain triglycerides (LCT). LCT’s are usually turned into fat. Since coconut oil is a MCT, it is more easily absorbed and converted to energy faster.

People in the tropics have incorporated coconuts in their diet for centuries. They consume large amounts of coconut oil every day. Instead of getting fatter, they remain healthy, lean and trim. Some other people who have acknowledged this truth for decades are people who are in the animal feed business. When animals are given vegetable oils, they put on weight and produce more fatty meat. When they are given coconut oil, they become very lean.

 Coconut oil boosts your metabolism

Not only does coconut oil convert to energy faster in your body, but it also boosts your metabolism, that promotes weight loss, helping your body burn fat more effectively.

Coconut oil may triple your calorie burn. Since coconut oil is a MCT, it is transformed into energy so quickly that it generates a lot of heat. Research has shown that MCT’s burn 3 times more calories for 6 hours after a meal than LCT’s.

This is very good news for people who have thyroid problems, because coconut oil improves slow thyroids by stimulating the production of extra thyroid hormones. Most other common oils, such as vegetable (soy) and corn have been proven to inhibit healthy thyroid function.

Coconut oil includes omega 3 fatty acids

The majority of cooking oils contain omega 6 fatty acids, something that we consume way too much in the United States. Our omega 6 to omega 3 ratio should be 1:1 but it is more like 50:1. We must drastically reduce our omega 6 oils and consume much more omega 3 oils to be healthy. And coconut oil is rich in these healthy omega 3 fatty acids.

Coconut oil provides you with energy

Due to the healthy omega 3 fatty acids and the fact that it boosts the metabolism, most people who switch to coconut oil feel a burst of extra energy in their daily life.

This is because coconut oil is nature’s richest source of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT’s), which increase metabolic rates and lead to weight loss. MCT’s promote thermogenesis, which increases the body’s metabolic process, producing energy.  Many individuals with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia have found that including coconut and coconut oil in their diet was beneficial to them.

The best thing you can use on your skin and hair is coconut oil

Coconut oil one of the best things you can apply directly on your skin and hair. It provides temporary relief to skin problems like rashes. It helps with healing and restoring skin to a younger appearance. It has also been known to help people who suffer from yeast infections in the skin, as well as a number of other skin problems.

Not only does it soften and smooth your skin, coconut oil also has antioxidant properties that protect the skin from free radical damage. Coconut oil could be an excellent massage oil too.

Coconut oil has healthy benefits that most other oils don’t

Coconut oil has anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-viral effects when both consumed and used on the skin.

Most oils oxidize and turn rancid rapidly leading to free radical damage in our bodies. Coconut oil is not easily oxidized and does not cause harmful free radical damage like polyunsaturated vegetable oils. Free radical damage is considered to be the reason of many health problems from arthritis to increased risk of cancers.

Coconut oil also helps your body absorb other nutrients more effectively, such as Vitamin E.

Coconut oil is one of the best oils you can use for cooking

It has a higher smoke point than olive oil, which means it can take higher temperatures much better. There are other healthy omega 3 oils we can choose to consume, such as flax and olive oil, but they don’t do well under the high temperature we use for cooking. Coconut oil works very well in higher cooking temperatures.

It is more difficult for coconut oil to go rancid, compared with other cooking oils, which are usually rancid long before you even bring them home. Coconut oil is stable for over a year at room temperature.

Due to the misinformation we’ve been given for years, we have lost out on the healthy benefits that coconut oil provides to the people of the tropics for centuries. But, fortunately, now it has been rediscovered! Coconut oil is really beneficial for us in so many ways,  so don’t wait any longer and start consuming and cooking with coconut oil today

Food Addiction Explained

Many people are fond of at least one product which has the effect of a stimulant and that at some point turns into an addiction. These products include exercise stimulant beverages (these come in cans and look like soda), fizzy aerated drinks, tobacco, betel nut, betel leaf, strong coffee, strong tea, mahuang (an ephedrine-like substance consumed in China), and alcoholic beverages.

Why do we consume them in the first place?

Everyone knows that products like these, consumed excessively, can seriously harm our bodies, but we still find them hard to resist. The desire to eat stimulant foods is a simple human weakness that has existed for a long time: human beings and many animals have always indulged in foods that provide a sort of emotional high. In medical terms, this means rapid heartbeat, a little perspiration, dilation or constriction of the pupils of the eyes, a warm flush on the face, and a sense of higher sensitivity, concentration and perception.

These sensations of a “high” stop functioning within a few hours, and we are left feeling listless and low. This leads to a craving for that food again, to feel the high one more time. And there we are going round and round in a vicious circle.

The physiology of addictions is as follows:

When you eat an addictive food, it stimulates the hormone like substances found at the end of your nerves, that activates an increase of similar stimulating substances and you experience a high. As the substances near the nerves are depleted, you get into the low phase, that leads you to crave that food again. This yo-yo phase of neural stimulation and depletion results in a pattern of addiction.

Consuming addictive foods is one of the oldest unhealthy food practices and, despite a revolution in health consciousness, it shows no signs of dying out.

Below are some side effects of certain addictive foods:

Alcohol Dependency: Erosion of stomach and intestinal lining, liver damage, nutritional deficiency.

Tobacco: Erosion of gum and tongue can cause cancer of the buccal mucosa.

Betel nut: Leads to the discoloration of the teeth, erosion of the lining of the mouth, and cancer of the mouth and upper tract. It also causes heart issues among the people who already have a weak heart.

Ma huang: It contains ephedrine and leads to heart issues.

Aerated drinks: High amounts of caffeine.

Caffeine and xanthine: Found in tea, coffee. These become dangerous only in very high doses; do not consume more than five cups a day.

Mixed drug reactions: People who consume medications for the heart, high blood pressure and asthma have to be cautious about the interactions of the drugs with stimulant foods, because mixing the two may be fatal. After years of experience, all doctors know how hard it is to break the food addictions of their patients. Thus, a good compromise is highly recommended. If you can’t break the addiction, then at least you should practice moderation.

Raw Food Diet

Our bodies thrive on all that is fresh and healthy. A raw food diet will bring a feeling of increased well-being. Raw food diets are based on unprocessed and uncooked plant food, if possible organic, like a variety of fresh fruits and veggies, nuts, seeds, grains, dried fruit, fresh juices and purified water.

Why Raw Food?

Basically a vegetarian diet, the raw food diet promotes consuming “living” food. Living food and juices contain the highest amount of fiber, which can be lost in processing. This kind of food is easily digested and tend to be lower in calories than the average diet.

Heating food above 116°F kills enzymes that assist in digestion and in absorption of food, reducing its nutritional value.

Benefits of a Raw Food Diet

A diet plan of at least 75% raw food provides a number of health benefits, such as increased energy levels, improved skin appearance, better digestion, weight loss and lowers the risk of serious diseases like heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

A raw food diet contains little or no saturated fats, is low in sodium, high in potassium, magnesium and fiber.
Raw food diets are also great for detoxification. Various blends of raw food and juices can be used for colon, liver, kidney and skin cleansing.

The Basics of a Raw Food Diet

Any kind of fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds, beans, nuts, legumes, young coconut milk and even seaweed, could be menu items of a raw food diet. Your selection of food may depend on your reasons for dieting, for example:

- sprouted brown rice slows down glucose absorption and improves metabolic process

- cabbage supports healthy cellular function; radish leaves act as an antioxidant

-carrots are a great source of vitamin A and also promotes healthy vision and cardiovascular system

You can use a sprouter to sprout seeds, grains, beans, and even wheat grass. Sprouts can be called a “super food”, because sprouts contain substantial levels of proteins, vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, chlorophyll pigments and enzymes, and are the perfect natural supplement.

Sprouts can be used in salads and soups, or can be juiced. Fresh juices are a great energy source and a good quality juicer, produces living juices that are full of important nutrients.
An excellent juice recipe to complement a raw food diet is a carrot juice with potato, fennel and apple. Simply juice four medium carrots, two apples, one small potato and one small stalk of fennel.
Fennel has been shown to lower and control inflammation of arthritis, to even mood fluctuation and depressive states and has the rare nutrient called manganese, plus zinc and vitamin B complex.
The nutritional value of grains and seeds is impressive. They contain most of the vitamins, in particular A, B, and E. They are also amazing natural sources of unsaturated fatty acids and lecithin, and an excellent source of proteins.

You may also use soy milk makers to make non-dairy drinks from different beans, rice, nuts, seeds and grains. If you want something a little bit more substantial than soy milk you can make your tofu.

Basically, the concept of a raw food diet is to consume unprocessed foods for at least 75% of the time. If the idea of raw food isn’t very appealing to you, you can warm the food a little as long as the food isn’t heated above 116°F.

Cautionary Note

As with any major change in diet, it’s a good idea to consult your physician before you start a special diet. This is especially true for children, pregnant women, anyone with anemia and anyone with a pre-existing medical condition.

Even natural foods could conflict with certain medications, therefore ask your doctor or pharmacist if you’re taking any medication.

Due to the fact that a raw food diet is detoxifying some people suffer a mild detox reaction such as mild headaches, nausea and cravings. These symptoms may last for several days and you’ll get more pleasure out of your raw food diet if you decrease consumption of meat, sugar and caffeine a week or so before starting the diet.

Last But Not Least

A raw food diet is definitely a great way to improve your overall health and wellbeing. Like anything worthwhile it takes time, energy and dedication. Because many of the foods for this specific type of diet are made from scratch there is some preparation time involved. There are numerous great products available on the market that will help you prepare your own healthy food and save you some time as well.

Along with regular exercise, a raw food diet is also a great weight loss method. If you’ve been feeling a little bit off, or just need some extra energy, then a raw food diet is definitely a good way to go.

Effortless Ways To Stay Active Every Day

You understand you should be getting some kind of exercise and you know of all the health benefits that come with a more active lifestyle. You’ve tried the entire gym thing, but it just wasn’t for you. The temptation to just sit in front of the TV, to relax with a good book, or to spend some extra time at your computer is just too big. Who wants to go to the gym right now anyway?

There are numerous other options to become more active that do not include jogging, weight lifting or other typical ways to work out. Below are a few suggestions to get you moving:

Chase your children around the yard

You’d be amazed at how much of a work out you’ll get playing catch with your kids. Time will fly while you are having fun and your children will enjoy the extra time with you. Just get out there and have some fun.

Turn up the music and dance around the house

While you’re dusting, putting up dishes, straightening up the kid’s rooms, or after you’ve been sitting around for too much time, simply play some of your preferred upbeat music and dance around in your house. Not only will you get your heartbeat up, but you’ll also have more fun doing some of those tasks.

Plant some flowers

When the weather is good, just get out there and plant some flowers. Or you could start a small vegetable garden, trim some hedges, cut the grass, or plant a tree. You get the idea. Just get out there, enjoy the sunshine and fresh air, and play in the dirt.  This actually counts as exercise.

Go for a walk with a friend

Go for a walk and invite a friend to come along. You may have some of the best conversations while on a walk. Getting to talk with a friend makes the time fly by and before you know it you’ve been walking for half an hour.

Listen to some music or an audio book while you walk

Keeping your mind on something else will make the time fly by and you’ll get some additional fun out of your walk. You may also want to consider getting an MP3 Player. You can easily add what you want to listen to and go for your walk.

Sign up for a yoga or Pilates class

Think about starting a yoga or Pilates class. Both of these workouts won’t make you sweaty and sore (mostly). You might also enjoy meeting new people in the class.

Take some dance lessons with your partner

Here is a difficult part: convince your partner to take some dance lessons. Dancing will give you quite the workout and it’s just very fun and of course romantic. Think about all your choices here. You can select from Ball Room Dancing, to Line Dancing, to Latin etc. Choose something that sounds fun to you and go for it. You’ll enjoy the extra one-on-one time with your partner as well.

Go for a swim at your local YMCA or aquatic center

Swimming makes for some great exercise. It is low impact and easy on your joints. Start by swimming a few laps, or play in the pool with your children.

Go for a bike ride

Take the entire family on a bicycle ride. You can ride through your neighborhood in the evenings or plan an extended trip for the weekend. Pack a picnic for extra fun and start peddling.

Go for a hike

Search for some hiking trails in your area and go for a hike. This could be an enjoyable activity for you and your friends, or take the entire family along. Begin with some easy trails and work yourself up to some longer or steeper trails.

Choose one or two of the activities and get moving.  You’ll come up with plenty of versions of your own. The most important thing is to find something you really enjoy, so you won’t give up. Get out there and get moving today.

Easy Ways To Be Healthier

In the hectic world that we live in it may be easy to overlook our health and wellness. We are so busy racing through our daily lives – family and household, work, social engagements, friends – that we don’t take the time to take care of ourselves. No wonder that so many of us are exhausted and run down. What are some simple things that we could do to improve our lifestyle?

Drink A lot of Water

You may have heard it a million times and you will probably hear it a million more – drink more water!

At this point in time 66% of people are not drinking enough water, therefore over half the population isn’t running on all six cylinders to start with – before things such as bad air, bad food and stress take their effect.

It’s not a hard thing to remedy. Just drink 10-12 glasses of water each day, and you will notice an enormous jump in your energy levels.

Raw Food For Better Life!

A little known fact is that heating food above 116°F kills most of the nutrient content. Considering that most people already aren’t eating enough veggies, that’s a major problem. Nutrition experts recommend 5 servings of fresh veggies a day. How many of us are actually taking that advice?

The best way to obtain the nutrients found in fresh veggies without spending all day long at stove is to juice your veggies. Make sure that you own a good juicer (some juicers expose vegetables to heat produced by friction while juicing, which breaks down essential enzymes). It takes a fraction of time and it’s convenient. You can take your juice to work as well as give some to the children for school lunches!

Wheatgrass, for example, is a great source of nutrition. It’s rich in chlorophyll and has more than 100 components that the body needs. Fresh grain is another excellent source of vitamins and minerals.

Energy In – Energy Out

Exercise is another challenging word for many of us. The truth is, exercise doesn’t have to be frustrating or incredibly boring. There are plenty of solutions.

Years ago gyms generally offered weight rooms, aerobics classes and maybe a tydro-circuit. Nowadays you can add water aerobics, yoga, pilates, dance-ercise, step classes and a full range of new workout options.

In case you don’t have the time or money for the gym, or choose to spend your mornings/nights at home, then consider an exercise bike or walker. If  you suffer from illness or injury or your fitness level is quite low, you may want to consider some this priceless advice:

Once you are physically unfit, and especially if you’re also unwell, it could be a big battle to just do the smallest amount of exercise a day. The risk is that inactivity leads to further loss of energy, that turns into a self-perpetuating cycle until you can barely get off the couch.

A great way to get back into a physical routine is to begin gradually. For the first couple of weeks, walk or ride for 5 minutes a day – exactly 5 minutes, no more, even if you think you could continue. When the 2 weeks are up, increase to 7 minutes, then 10 minutes, 12 minutes… Continue to slowly increase your activity until you’re at a level that you’re comfortable with.

It may sound ridiculous, but it works. In effect, you trick your system into generating more energy. You’re developing your exercise time up so slowly that your body doesn’t  realize what’s happening. Follow this method and, soon you’ll be comfortably exercising within your limits every day.

If you can rearrange your daily life a little to fit a better diet plan and a little exercise, and if you remember to drink a lot of water, you’ll be well on the way of living a healthy life. Additionally, don’t forget to take some quiet time for yourself. Meditating is a great way to reduce stress. You don’t have to sit around for hours, just give yourself 5 minutes of quiet time each day – even in the shower, if that is the only place where you can get time out – and have a little catch up with yourself.

And, last but by no means least, laugh! You’ll be surprised how much such a simple thing can lift your spirits!

Top Superfoods For Your Health

Here is a list of the top super foods that most health specialists agree on. From fruits and vegetables, to whole grains, nuts, beans and legumes, this power packed nutritional listing will take you into the greatest years of your life and beyond.

1. Cantaloupe

Just a quarter of cantaloupe provides almost all the vitamin A required in one day. Since the beta-carotene in a cantaloupe converts to vitamin A, you receive both nutrients at the same time. These vision-strengthening nutrients can help reduce the risk of developing cataracts. Like an orange, cantaloupe is also rich in vitamin C, which helps our immune system. It is also a great source of vitamin B6, dietary fiber, folate, niacin, and potassium, which assists in maintaining good blood sugar levels and metabolism. This power fruit may help lower our risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer.

2. Blueberries

These slightly sweet berries have an ability to eliminate free radicals that may cause cancer. Low in calories, they provide antioxidant phytonutrients known as anthocyanidins, which boost the effects of vitamin C. These antioxidants can help to prevent cataracts, glaucoma, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, peptic ulcers, heart disease and cancer.

1. Tomatoes

Tomatoes help us to combat heart disease and cancers like colorectal, prostate, breast, endometrial, lung, and cancer of the pancreas. Tomatoes are also great source of vitamin C, A, and K. In a 2004 study has found that tomato juice alone may help to reduce blood clotting.

Fresh, organic tomatoes offer three times as much of the cancer-fighting carotenoid lycopene. Even organic ketchup is way better for you than regular ketchup! Search for tomato pastes and sauces that contain the whole tomato (including peels) because you will take in 75% more lycopene and almost two times the amount of beta-carotene.

2. Sweet Potatoes

Being an excellent source of vitamin A, C, and manganese, sweet potatoes are also a great source of copper, dietary fiber, vitamin B6, potassium and iron. Those people who are smokers or prone to second- hand smoke may benefit significantly from this root vegetable that helps to protect us against emphysema.

3. Spinach and Kale

A cancer-fighter and cardio-helper, spinach and kale are the best as far as green leafy vegetables are concerned. Just like broccoli, they offer an excellent source of vitamin A and C. Kale is a very good source of calcium at 25% per cup, boiled. Vitamin K is abundantly found in spinach, with almost 200% of the Daily Value available, helps to reduce bone loss.

Whole Grains

Whole Grain Bread, Pasta and Brown Rice

The very first thing to do while buying whole grain bread and pasta  is to ensure it really is 100% whole grain. Remember to check the list of ingredients on the package. For example, look for the exact phrase “whole wheat flour” as one of the first ingredients listed in whole wheat bread. In case it’s not listed as such, then it’s not whole grain. Wheat grain is a cancer-fighting grain that also helps us to regulate our bowel movements.

Brown rice is also a much better option than refined grain (white rice) for the same reason as choosing whole wheat bread. Whole wheat flour or brown rice that becomes white flour or white rice actually destroys between 50-90% of vitamin B3, vitamin B1, vitamin B6, manganese, phosphorus, iron, and all of the dietary fiber and essential fatty acids we need. Even if refined white flour or white rice is “enriched,” it is not even close to  the same form as the original unprocessed kind. In fact, 11 nutrients are actually lost and are not replaced during the “enrichment” process!

These nuts are rich in omega-3 fats. A quarter cup of walnuts would provide about 90% of the omega-3 needed in one day. Walnuts provide other numerous health benefits such as heart protection, better cognitive function, anti-inflammatory advantages associated with asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory skin diseases like eczema and psoriasis. They may even help to combat cancer and also support the immune system.

Beans and Legumes

Black Beans and Lentils

While black beans are a great source of fiber that can lower cholesterol levels, so are lentils. The high fiber content in both helps to maintain blood sugar levels. Also a fat-free, high quality protein with extra minerals and B-vitamins, black beans and lentils make you feel full and don’t expand your waistline.

A complete, one-stop supply of using a variety of beans and lentils comes easy when you find a bag of 15-bean mix (includes black beans, lentils, navy, pinto, red, kidney, etc.) at the supermarket. Consider making a delicious soup with the addition of tomatoes, onions, garlic and your favorite spices with this bean mixture.

Skim Milk and Yogurt

Skim milk (or low-fat) helps to maintain strong bones, providing an excellent source of calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin K. These nutrients help to protect colon cells from cancer-causing chemicals, bone loss, migraine headaches, premenstrual symptom, and childhood obesity. Recent studies show that overweight adults lose weight, especially around the waistline, when consuming low-fat dairy such as skim milk and yogurt.

Yogurt also contains the essential nutrients such as phosphorous and vitamin B2, vitamin B12, vitamin B5, zinc, potassium, and protein. Yogurt’s live bacterial cultures also provide a lot of health benefits that may help us live longer and reinforce our immune system.

Salmon is high in protein, low in saturated fat and rich in omega-3 fats. Salmon is a heart-healthy food and is recommended to consume at least twice a week. When choosing salmon, it’s better to avoid farm raised and select wild instead. Research show that farmed salmon may cause cancer because it may carry high levels of carcinogenic chemicals called polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).

Green Tea and “Power” Water

Although not food, the health benefits of these beverages are worthy of mentioning.

Green tea has beneficial phytonutrients and lower levels of caffeine than all other teas. The more green tea is studied, the more health benefits are found. A cancer fighter as well, green tea has antioxidant effects that reduce risks of bacterial or viral infections to cardiovascular disease, cancer, stroke, periodontal disease, and osteoporosis.

Water packed with vitamins and/or naturally sweetened fruit are also the latest trend. Some offer a full day’s supply of vitamin C while others promise no artificial sweeteners with a full, fruity taste.

As you can see, these super foods are worth every bite. Now that you know which foods can help save your life, what’s more important than investing in your health?
