Hormonal Balance And Weight Loss

Our hormone health affects our bodies in several ways and one of them is an increase in weight. Step One.

Food Addiction Explained

Many people are fond of at least one product which has the effect of a stimulant and that at some point turns into an addiction. These products include exercise stimulant beverages (these come in cans and look like soda), fizzy aerated drinks, tobacco, betel nut, betel leaf, strong coffee, strong tea, mahuang (an ephedrine-like substance consumed in China), and alcoholic beverages.

Why do we consume them in the first place?

Everyone knows that products like these, consumed excessively, can seriously harm our bodies, but we still find them hard to resist. The desire to eat stimulant foods is a simple human weakness that has existed for a long time: human beings and many animals have always indulged in foods that provide a sort of emotional high. In medical terms, this means rapid heartbeat, a little perspiration, dilation or constriction of the pupils of the eyes, a warm flush on the face, and a sense of higher sensitivity, concentration and perception.

These sensations of a “high” stop functioning within a few hours, and we are left feeling listless and low. This leads to a craving for that food again, to feel the high one more time. And there we are going round and round in a vicious circle.

The physiology of addictions is as follows:

When you eat an addictive food, it stimulates the hormone like substances found at the end of your nerves, that activates an increase of similar stimulating substances and you experience a high. As the substances near the nerves are depleted, you get into the low phase, that leads you to crave that food again. This yo-yo phase of neural stimulation and depletion results in a pattern of addiction.

Consuming addictive foods is one of the oldest unhealthy food practices and, despite a revolution in health consciousness, it shows no signs of dying out.

Below are some side effects of certain addictive foods:

Alcohol Dependency: Erosion of stomach and intestinal lining, liver damage, nutritional deficiency.

Tobacco: Erosion of gum and tongue can cause cancer of the buccal mucosa.

Betel nut: Leads to the discoloration of the teeth, erosion of the lining of the mouth, and cancer of the mouth and upper tract. It also causes heart issues among the people who already have a weak heart.

Ma huang: It contains ephedrine and leads to heart issues.

Aerated drinks: High amounts of caffeine.

Caffeine and xanthine: Found in tea, coffee. These become dangerous only in very high doses; do not consume more than five cups a day.

Mixed drug reactions: People who consume medications for the heart, high blood pressure and asthma have to be cautious about the interactions of the drugs with stimulant foods, because mixing the two may be fatal. After years of experience, all doctors know how hard it is to break the food addictions of their patients. Thus, a good compromise is highly recommended. If you can’t break the addiction, then at least you should practice moderation.

Basically, the concept of a raw food diet is to consume unprocessed foods for at least 75% of the time. If the idea of raw food isn’t very appealing to you, you can warm the food a little as long as the food isn’t heated above 116°F.

As with any major change in diet, it’s a good idea to consult your physician before you start a special diet. This is especially true for children, pregnant women, anyone with anemia and anyone with a pre-existing medical condition.

Effortless Ways To Stay Active Every Day

You understand you should be getting some kind of exercise and you know of all the health benefits that come with a more active lifestyle. You’ve tried the entire gym thing, but it just wasn’t for you. The temptation to just sit in front of the TV, to relax with a good book, or to spend some extra time at your computer is just too big. Who wants to go to the gym right now anyway?

There are numerous other options to become more active that do not include jogging, weight lifting or other typical ways to work out. Below are a few suggestions to get you moving:

Chase your children around the yard

You’d be amazed at how much of a work out you’ll get playing catch with your kids. Time will fly while you are having fun and your children will enjoy the extra time with you. Just get out there and have some fun.

Turn up the music and dance around the house

While you’re dusting, putting up dishes, straightening up the kid’s rooms, or after you’ve been sitting around for too much time, simply play some of your preferred upbeat music and dance around in your house. Not only will you get your heartbeat up, but you’ll also have more fun doing some of those tasks.

Plant some flowers

When the weather is good, just get out there and plant some flowers. Or you could start a small vegetable garden, trim some hedges, cut the grass, or plant a tree. You get the idea. Just get out there, enjoy the sunshine and fresh air, and play in the dirt.  This actually counts as exercise.

Go for a walk with a friend

Go for a walk and invite a friend to come along. You may have some of the best conversations while on a walk. Getting to talk with a friend makes the time fly by and before you know it you’ve been walking for half an hour.

Listen to some music or an audio book while you walk

Keeping your mind on something else will make the time fly by and you’ll get some additional fun out of your walk. You may also want to consider getting an MP3 Player. You can easily add what you want to listen to and go for your walk.

Sign up for a yoga or Pilates class

Think about starting a yoga or Pilates class. Both of these workouts won’t make you sweaty and sore (mostly). You might also enjoy meeting new people in the class.

Take some dance lessons with your partner

Here is a difficult part: convince your partner to take some dance lessons. Dancing will give you quite the workout and it’s just very fun and of course romantic. Think about all your choices here. You can select from Ball Room Dancing, to Line Dancing, to Latin etc. Choose something that sounds fun to you and go for it. You’ll enjoy the extra one-on-one time with your partner as well.

 Go for a swim at your local YMCA or aquatic center

Swimming makes for some great exercise. It is low impact and easy on your joints. Start by swimming a few laps, or play in the pool with your children.

Go for a bike ride

Take the entire family on a bicycle ride. You can ride through your neighborhood in the evenings or plan an extended trip for the weekend. Pack a picnic for extra fun and start peddling.

Go for a hike

Search for some hiking trails in your area and go for a hike. This could be an enjoyable activity for you and your friends, or take the entire family along. Begin with some easy trails and work yourself up to some longer or steeper trails.

Choose one or two of the activities and get moving.  You’ll come up with plenty of versions of your own. The most important thing is to find something you really enjoy, so you won’t give up. Get out there and get moving today.

Easy Ways To Be Healthier

In the hectic world that we live in it may be easy to overlook our health and wellness. We are so busy racing through our daily lives – family and household, work, social engagements, friends – that we don’t take the time to take care of ourselves. No wonder that so many of us are exhausted and run down. What are some simple things that we could do to improve our lifestyle?

Drink A lot of Water

You may have heard it a million times and you will probably hear it a million more – drink more water!

Think about it: Our body is 72% water. A 5% drop in fluids creates 25-30% loss in energy. A 15% drop in fluids leads to death! At this point in time 66% of people are not drinking enough water, therefore over half the population isn’t running on all six cylinders to start with – before things such as bad air, bad food and stress take their effect.

It’s not a hard thing to remedy. Just drink 10-12 glasses of water each day, and you will notice an enormous jump in your energy levels.

Raw Food For Better Life!

A little known fact is that heating food above 116°F kills most of the nutrient content. Considering that most people already aren’t eating enough veggies, that’s a major problem. Nutrition experts recommend 5 servings of fresh veggies a day. How many of us are actually taking that advice?

The best way to obtain the nutrients found in fresh veggies without spending all day long at stove is to juice your veggies. Make sure that you own a good juicer (some juicers expose vegetables to heat produced by friction while juicing, which breaks down essential enzymes). It takes a fraction of time and it’s convenient. You can take your juice to work as well as give some to the children for school lunches!

Wheatgrass, for example, is a great source of nutrition. It’s rich in chlorophyll and has more than 100 components that the body needs. Fresh grain is another excellent source of vitamins and minerals.

Energy In – Energy Out

Exercise is another challenging word for many of us. The truth is, exercise doesn’t have to be frustrating or incredibly boring. There are plenty of solutions.

Years ago gyms generally offered weight rooms, aerobics classes and maybe a tydro-circuit. Nowadays you can add water aerobics, yoga, pilates, dance-ercise, step classes and a full range of new workout options.

In case you don’t have the time or money for the gym, or choose to spend your mornings/nights at home, then consider an exercise bike or walker. If  you suffer from illness or injury or your fitness level is quite low, you may want to consider some this priceless advice:

Once you are physically unfit, and especially if you’re also unwell, it could be a big battle to just do the smallest amount of exercise a day. The risk is that inactivity leads to further loss of energy, that turns into a self-perpetuating cycle until you can barely get off the couch.

A great way to get back into a physical routine is to begin gradually. For the first couple of weeks, walk or ride for 5 minutes a day – exactly 5 minutes, no more, even if you think you could continue. When the 2 weeks are up, increase to 7 minutes, then 10 minutes, 12 minutes… Continue to slowly increase your activity until you’re at a level that you’re comfortable with.

It may sound ridiculous, but it works. In effect, you trick your system into generating more energy. You’re developing your exercise time up so slowly that your body doesn’t  realize what’s happening. Follow this method and, soon you’ll be comfortably exercising within your limits every day.

If you can rearrange your daily life a little to fit a better diet plan and a little exercise, and if you remember to drink a lot of water, you’ll be well on the way of living a healthy life. Additionally, don’t forget to take some quiet time for yourself. Meditating is a great way to reduce stress. You don’t have to sit around for hours, just give yourself 5 minutes of quiet time each day – even in the shower, if that is the only place where you can get time out – and have a little catch up with yourself.

And, last but by no means least, laugh! You’ll be surprised how much such a simple thing can lift your spirits!
